During his senior year of college in 2013, Piker interned at The Young Turks. After graduating, he was hired by the network’s advertising sales and business department. Piker acknowledged that this connection could make him a “nepo baby,” although he believed that such advantages would not matter in a perfect society. When an opportunity arose to host the show as a fill-in, he asked to take the role and later became both a host and producer.
In 2016, Piker created and hosted The Breakdown, a video series produced by the TYT Network and aired on Facebook. Piker began streaming on Twitch on March 23, 2018, while still working at The Young Turks. In January 2020, he left the network to concentrate on his career as a Twitch streamer. In 2021, Piker was banned from Twitch for one week after using the slur “cracker” in reference to white people, following bans issued to two of his chat moderators for using the term. He argued that the word should not be considered a slur because, in his view, people using it were “powerless” and were expressing frustration as members of a historically oppressed group. A paper published in New Media & Society later criticized Twitch’s decision to punish Piker while noting the prevalence of epithets directed at minority groups on the platform.
Piker received credentialed access to the 2024 Democratic National Convention, where he livestreamed his coverage. His stream covering election night during the 2024 United States presidential election attracted 7.5 million viewers. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Piker partnered with CARE International to raise more than $200,000 for Ukrainian humanitarian aid while streaming Elden Ring. His coverage of the conflict attracted an average audience of more than 70,000 viewers. Following the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquake, Piker organized a fundraising campaign that was supported and promoted by other streamers and content creators, including Jacksepticeye, Valkyrae, Ludwig Ahgren, and IShowSpeed.

By 2026, Piker had shifted from primarily promoting causes to actively promoting political candidates. In June 2026, Piker was refused entry to the United Kingdom alongside Uygur. Piker argued that the decision was connected to his criticism of Israel. The UK Home Office stated that the decision was based on a potential risk and that his presence “may not be conducive to the public good.” Free-speech activists criticized the decision. Piker had been invited to speak at the Oxford Union and SXSW London, with the Oxford Union stating that he would deliver his speech through a livestream. Piker described the decision as evidence of what he viewed as a “fascist” direction being taken by the Western world.
During a March 2026 livestream, Piker helped raise more than $56,000 for congressional candidate Oliver Larkin. Wired described the fundraiser as an example of content creators using their online influence to directly support political fundraising. During the 2025 New York City mayoral election, Piker expressed support for Zohran Mamdani, who also appeared on his stream. The remark was also featured in a televised advertisement from a pro-Andrew Cuomo super PAC. Views and political beliefs
Piker is commonly described as a leftist, socialist, and Marxist, and has also been characterized as far-left. Andrew Marantz of The New Yorker described Piker as anti-Trump but “hardly a loyal Democrat.” Instead, Marantz characterized him as an “old-school leftist” who is critical of the “American empire.” In an interview with GQ magazine, Piker said his goal was to push the Democratic Party toward more progressive positions. Intelligencer described him as “the AOC of Twitch.”
Piker has said that growing up in Turkey during the premiership of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan influenced both his left-wing political views and his willingness to express them publicly. American politics
Piker supported Bernie Sanders’ presidential primary campaigns in 2016 and 2020 and has been an outspoken critic of both the Democratic and Republican parties. He opposed Donald Trump’s travel ban in 2017. After Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was arrested, Piker celebrated Mangione as “hotter than me” and spoke in generally favorable terms about what he described as “the propaganda of the deed” during his stream, while avoiding violations of Twitch’s rules concerning the glorification of violence. Citing Friedrich Engels, Piker later said that Thompson had committed social murder.
Authoritarianism
Piker has said that his interest in politics began after Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sued a cartoonist for portraying him as a cat, which Piker viewed as an act of “suppression of freedom.” GQ described Piker as using livestreaming to “fight back” against authoritarianism. In the profile, Piker argued that Donald Trump could weaken or remove constitutional protections, including due process, birthright citizenship, and the First Amendment, before rebuilding the legal system to promote what Piker described as a “white nativist agenda.”
During an October 2025 interview with Morning Edition, Piker expressed concern that if the Trump administration succeeded in suppressing speech it considered unacceptable, the United States could “end up in an authoritarian nightmare” where “one of the last bastions of liberalism is eroded.” In April 2026, during a debate at the Yale Political Union, Piker positioned himself against what he called the “dying American Empire.” He said capitalism had created things worth preserving, but argued that these achievements were produced through labor without their benefits being distributed equally. He concluded, “If a dictatorship is inevitable, I’d rather have it be a dictatorship of the proletariat.”

Regarding international affairs, The Atlantic and The Dispatch have characterized Piker as sympathetic toward left-wing authoritarian governments. They have cited his admiration for China as his preferred model of socialism, his comparison of China’s absorption of Tibet to the Union’s defeat of the Confederacy, his description of facilities where Uyghurs are detained as “re-education camps,” his characterization of Mao Zedong as “one of the great leaders of this world,” and his description of the collapse of the Soviet Union as “one of the greatest catastrophes of the 20th century.”
Both publications have also described Piker’s worldview as showing broad sympathy toward China, Cuba, Russia, and authoritarianism more generally. Vox argued that “campism” is the most appropriate description of Piker’s approach to international relations. Campism is a position that evaluates foreign movements and governments largely according to how hostile they are toward the West rather than primarily judging them by their internal values. Vox cited several of Piker’s positions as evidence of this outlook, including his stated lack of an issue with Hezbollah and his support for Mao despite the death toll associated with the Great Leap Forward. Vox contrasted these positions with Piker’s stated belief that governments should be judged according to the number of civilians they kill.
Russian invasion of Ukraine
During the period leading up to Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Piker said that Russia would not attack. He later apologized, saying that he did not believe a regional power would act so irrationally and acknowledged that he had been wrong. Piker has argued that the United States helped create the conditions that led to the invasion and has compared Russia’s actions with the history of U.S. invasions.
Israel and Palestine
Piker has described himself as “an outspoken advocate for Palestinian emancipation” and an anti-Zionist. He has frequently discussed the Gaza war, expressing support for Palestinians while criticizing the Israeli government. In May 2024, Piker described allegations that Hamas committed sexual violence during the October 7 attacks as “rape fantasies” and “rape hallucinations.” He also stated, “It doesn’t matter if rape happened on October 7th. It doesn’t change the dynamic for me.”
During an April 2026 interview with The New Republic, Piker explained that he was debating whether sexual violence had occurred during the October 7 attacks. He said that sexual violence does occur in situations like this and acknowledged testimony concerning sexual violence among hostages, but argued that this did not alter his position that Israel was committing genocide against Palestinians and that he opposed it.
In November 2024, Congressman Ritchie Torres criticized Twitch over what he described as the platform’s amplification of antisemitism and called for an investigation into Piker. A campaign involving various commentators also pressured advertisers to leave Twitch over alleged platforming of antisemitism, including Piker’s political commentary about the conflict. Torres and members of the campaign shared clips from Piker’s channel that they characterized as antisemitic. Piker argued that the clips had been taken out of context and that his comments were directed at the Israeli government rather than Jewish people. Following the controversy, some advertisers withdrew advertisements from Twitch.
Pike on Israel and Palestine
Piker referred to some far-right Haredi Jews in Israel as “inbred.” He later explained that he intended the term as a pejorative directed at ethno-religious and racial supremacists of different backgrounds and said that it had nothing to do with Judaism. In November 2025, Piker traveled to China and appeared on the state-run China Global Television Network. In July 2024, Alex Mahadevan of the Poynter Institute for Media Studies cited Piker as an example of the “online chattering class” whose members do not hold themselves to the same journalistic ethics as traditional media professionals.
